Transport for London’s (TfL) Commissioner has set out an ambitious vision for the capital’s transport future, telling delegates at this year’s Interchange event in Manchester that London’s integrated network “will only continue to grow in size, in intelligence, and in resilience.”
Speaking at the UK’s leading annual gathering for the integrated transport infrastructure community, he said collaboration across the sector would be key to delivering long-term ambitions for both London and the wider country.
“With all of you here as allies we can achieve our aspirations for London and the wider country and will build on the successes of the last quarter of a century,” he said.
The Commissioner highlighted TfL’s recently secured £2.2 billion funding settlement over the next four years to support its capital renewal programme – the largest multi-year funding agreement for London in more than a decade. He described the settlement as a “significant, positive result” not just for TfL and London, but for the UK as a whole.
“This is the result of years of rigorous planning, influencing and case making,” he said. “TfL now has much greater financial certainty over the next few years.”
He added that, alongside a second consecutive operational surplus, the settlement has enabled TfL to publish a new business plan outlining how it will invest in and improve the capital’s transport system in the years ahead.
Interchange, which runs over two days, brings together leaders from across the transport, infrastructure and technology sectors. This year’s themes include Places, Energy, Environment, Digital and Data, and a new Rethinking stream. The event is co-located with the ITS UK Annual Conference and Infrastructure Client Group Live.
Headline speakers on the final day include Chris Boardman, Chair of Active Travel England, Isabel Dedring of Arup, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
