Transport for London (TfL) Commissioner Andy Lord has expressed serious concern following reports highlighting poor working conditions faced by bus drivers in the capital.
An investigation revealed that some drivers had experienced extreme fatigue, with reports of individuals falling asleep while on duty. Others described a lack of access to basic facilities, leading to situations where drivers felt forced to use improvised solutions during shifts.
Addressing the issue at the London Assembly, Lord said he was deeply troubled by the findings and acknowledged that improvements are needed. He emphasised that senior leadership within TfL and bus operating companies are aware of the concerns and are taking steps to address them.
He noted that ensuring staff wellbeing is a priority across all transport organisations, and that managers at every level must respond appropriately when workers raise issues or require support. Lord described the reported conditions as unacceptable and stressed the need to prevent such situations from continuing.
Further accounts from drivers have reinforced concerns around fatigue and working environments. One driver described falling asleep momentarily at traffic lights due to exhaustion, while others raised issues about cleanliness and air quality inside vehicle cabs, citing dust and poor ventilation as ongoing problems.
TfL has reiterated that bus drivers play a critical role in keeping London moving and said it is working with operators to improve welfare, health and safety standards. The organisation added that it expects high standards from its contractors and is implementing measures to ensure fair scheduling, safe vehicles and proper facilities for staff.
TfL also encouraged drivers to report any concerns through official channels, including unions and confidential reporting services, assuring that all issues raised would be investigated thoroughly.
