Transport for London (TfL) has attracted widespread attention after posting on social media to celebrate its youngest newly licensed taxi driver, generating hundreds of thousands of views within hours.

The post, shared on 29 January, announced that a driver named Connor had received his London Taxi Driver’s Licence on his 21st birthday. By Friday morning, the update had amassed over 480,000 views and sparked extensive engagement from both the taxi trade and the general public.

TfL used the post to highlight the accessibility of the Knowledge of London, noting that it is open to anyone willing to invest the time and effort required. The authority also provided guidance for prospective drivers interested in joining the licensed taxi trade.

Under current licensing rules, applicants must be at least 21 years old to hold a London Taxi Driver’s Licence. However, candidates are allowed to begin studying for the Knowledge of London before reaching that age, enabling those who complete it early to qualify immediately upon turning 21, provided they meet all other requirements, including medical checks, character assessments, and topographical tests.

The Knowledge of London is a rigorous process requiring candidates to memorise thousands of streets, landmarks, and routes within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross. While the journey typically takes over two years, TfL imposes no minimum age to start learning, only to obtain the licence.

The viral post has reignited discussion within the trade about attracting younger drivers, at a time when London’s black cab workforce is ageing. TfL has emphasised that lowering barriers to entry—while maintaining high standards—is key to supporting the long-term sustainability of the licensed taxi industry.
