Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has started the procurement process for the next stage of its multi-million-pound programme to electrify bus depots across the region.

A contract notice released on 1 December outlines plans for Tranche 5, which will involve major upgrades at the Wiganand Wythenshawe depots. TfGM has also signalled that the successful bidder could be retained for Tranche 6, though the locations for that phase have not yet been identified.

The work will involve a wide range of infrastructure improvements, including:

  • Installation of new high-voltage systems

  • Construction and refurbishment of bus station infrastructure

  • Development of existing RIBA Stage 2 design work into full detailed designs

  • Delivery of all associated construction activity needed to support electric bus operations

The contract is valued at around £60m before VAT.

TfGM plans to engage with the market later this month, ahead of issuing the formal tender documents in March 2026. The proposed contract period runs from 31 July 2026 to 14 December 2029, with an optional one-year extension to accommodate any delays.

The appointment will be made using the competitive flexible procedure permitted under the Procurement Act 2023, and TfGM has encouraged small and medium-sized firms to take part.

Bids will be submitted through the ProContract platform, with the deadline set for 30 June 2026. TfGM expects to confirm the winning contractor on 17 July 2026.
