Plans for a £65m upgrade of the A511 between Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch have moved forward with the appointment of Taylor Woodrow to deliver early contractor involvement (ECI).

Working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, the contractor will manage the pre-construction phase ahead of the main works, which are scheduled to begin in 2026. The project aims to ease congestion, improve journey times, and enhance safety along one of the county’s busiest routes, while also supporting regional growth.

Councillor Charles Whitford, cabinet member for highways and transport, said the appointment was an important milestone:“This is a critical infrastructure project that will reduce congestion and improve connectivity across the region. Taylor Woodrow brings a proven record in delivering major schemes, and we look forward to working closely with them to refine the plans before construction begins.”

Matthew Stubbings, Business Unit Director for Taylor Woodrow, added:“We are delighted to be working with Leicestershire County Council on this vital project. Our extensive experience in delivering complex infrastructure schemes will ensure we complete the work efficiently, minimising disruption for local communities.”

The scheme has a provisional £41.7m allocation from the Department for Transport, confirmed by government in July 2025 subject to final business case approval, with the remainder to be funded through Section 106 developer contributions.

The A511 Major Road Network (MRN) growth corridor programme includes a series of upgrades between junction 13 of the A42 near Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the A50 Field Head roundabout near Markfield, close to M1 junction 22. Key proposals include dualling part of Stephenson Way and creating a new link road from the A511 Bardon Road roundabout to the Grange Road housing development.
