Tampered E-Bikes Seen as Increasing Danger for UK Cyclists

A recent study has found that tampered e-bikes are now viewed as a bigger threat to cyclists than motor vehicles on UK roads.

Research by Cycleplan surveyed 500 regular cyclists and revealed that around eight per cent consider illegally modified e-bikes the greatest risk to their safety—surpassing concerns about cars, buses, or lorries.

Just a few years ago, the majority of cyclists cited motor traffic as their main danger, but attitudes appear to be shifting. The study also shows a decline in confidence among riders, with only 18 per cent saying they feel safe cycling in 2026, down from 27 per cent three years earlier.

Incidents remain high, with 40 per cent of respondents reporting a crash or near miss in the past year, compared to 33 per cent in 2023. Cyclists described the behaviour of some e-bike riders as unpredictable and alarming. One said: “The biggest problem is dark dressed, no lights, electric bikes doing very high speeds at junctions. You’re far more likely to see a car and can predict how they move.”

Another added: “The number of times I’ve seen modified e-bike users almost hit something in the last year is very unhelpful for all cyclists who use an electric bicycle properly.” A third cyclist confessed: “I am literally too scared to cycle now.”

The findings highlight growing safety concerns on UK roads as the popularity of e-bikes continues to rise.
