New Integrated Control Centre will provide round-the-clock oversight of equipment, operations and safety across the company's UK and Ireland airport network.

Swissport has unveiled a new technology-driven operations centre at Birmingham Airport, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to modernise airport ground handling through digital monitoring and real-time operational management.

The newly opened Integrated Control Centre (ICC) will operate around the clock, acting as the command hub for Swissport's UK and Ireland business. Bringing together operational control systems, artificial intelligence, live video feeds, telematics and geo-fencing technology, the facility is designed to give teams a comprehensive view of day-to-day activity across the company's airport operations.

More than 2,000 pieces of ground support equipment are connected to the system, enabling controllers to monitor their location, availability and performance in real time. Swissport believes the enhanced visibility will help improve aircraft turnaround times, speed up responses to operational disruption and ensure resources are deployed more efficiently during busy periods.

The investment reflects a growing trend within the aviation sector towards greater use of digital technologies to improve resilience as passenger numbers continue to rise and airport operations become increasingly complex.

Safety has also been a central consideration in the development of the new control centre. Swissport confirmed that its introduction of telematics and driver-facing safety camera technology followed consultation with employee representatives and was implemented through an agreed framework with relevant stakeholders.

Beyond day-to-day operational management, the Birmingham-based facility is expected to play a key role during periods of severe disruption or seasonal peaks, providing enhanced oversight of equipment movements and operational resources across the company's regional network.

Swissport is already planning to expand the centre's capabilities ahead of the forthcoming winter season, with live monitoring of aircraft de-icing operations set to become part of the platform before winter 2026/27.

Karen Cox, Chief Executive Officer of Swissport UK & Ireland, said the investment demonstrates the company's commitment to using technology to strengthen operational performance while creating new skilled employment opportunities at Birmingham Airport.

Swissport is among the world's largest providers of aviation ground services, operating at more than 300 airports across 49 countries. Its portfolio includes passenger handling, ramp services, cargo logistics and airport hospitality, supporting airlines throughout the global aviation industry.

The Birmingham Integrated Control Centre forms part of a wider digital transformation

programme aimed at making airport operations more connected, data-driven and responsive. As airlines and airport service providers continue to invest in automation and intelligent monitoring, facilities such as the ICC are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving efficiency, maintaining operational resilience and supporting the next generation of ground handling services.
