A new electric cargo bike is set to be introduced on the streets of Sunderland as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable transport and reduce emissions.

The initiative, delivered by Sunderland City Council in partnership with the city’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), will see the e-cargo bike used across key locations including the city centre, Sheepfolds and the seafront.

The scheme is believed to be the first of its kind in the North East, marking a significant step in adopting low-emission alternatives for day-to-day operational tasks.

Equipped with a large storage compartment, the bike is designed to carry equipment and support a variety of activities. These include litter picking, street cleaning and wider community-focused work carried out by local street rangers.

The introduction of the vehicle has also opened the door to future services, including a potential cardboard recycling collection scheme for local businesses.

Funding for the project has been secured through the Department for Transport and the North East Combined Authority, via the 2024/25 Active Travel Capability Fund, which is administered by Active Travel England to help councils deliver sustainable travel initiatives.

Sharon Appleby, Chief Executive of Sunderland BIDs, said the e-cargo bike would provide a flexible and practical solution for supporting businesses and improving the local environment, while also contributing to wider sustainability goals.

Councillor Lindsey Leonard, portfolio holder for Environment, Transport and Net Zero at Sunderland City Council, described the project as an innovative step towards cleaner and more efficient ways of working. She added that the collaboration demonstrates how partnerships can drive forward new approaches that benefit residents, businesses and visitors alike.

The council hopes the scheme will encourage further sustainable initiatives across the region as it continues to explore greener ways to deliver essential services.
