Stansted Express Tests Night-Time Rail Links to Match Around-the-Clock Air Travel

Pilot scheme will assess demand for overnight trains connecting London Stansted Airport with the capital during the early hours.

Passengers travelling to and from London Stansted Airport during the early hours of the morning are set to benefit from improved rail connectivity as Greater Anglia launches a trial of overnight Stansted Express services.

Running throughout the summer, the pilot is designed to bridge the gap between traditional rail operating hours and the airport's increasingly round-the-clock flight schedule, offering an alternative to private cars and taxis for late-night arrivals and early-morning departures.

Overnight Connections Every Friday Night

The trial, which began on 3 July, will operate every Friday night into Saturday morning until 25 September.

Under the temporary timetable, trains will generally run at 30-minute intervals between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale from 11.30pm until 5.00am. The service has been timed to connect with London's Victoria line Night Tube, providing onward travel into the capital while the Underground continues to operate overnight.

A smaller number of services will also extend to or originate from London Liverpool Street, providing direct access to the City for some passengers.

Meeting Changing Travel Patterns

The introduction reflects the changing nature of modern aviation, where flight schedules increasingly extend well beyond conventional public transport operating hours.

With many departures scheduled before dawn and arrivals continuing after midnight, airports across the UK face growing pressure to improve access for passengers and staff during periods when transport options are traditionally limited.

By extending rail services overnight, Greater Anglia hopes to make airport travel more convenient while reducing reliance on road transport.

Demand Will Shape the Future

Passenger numbers will be closely monitored throughout the trial to determine whether overnight Stansted Express services could become a permanent feature of the timetable.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said the initiative would strengthen links between central London and one of the UK's busiest airports while supporting wider efforts to encourage greater use of the rail network.

The pilot also aligns with London Stansted Airport's long-term ambition to increase the proportion of travellers and employees using sustainable public transport rather than private vehicles.

Supporting More Sustainable Airport Access

Improving transport options outside standard operating hours has become an increasing priority for airports seeking to reduce congestion and lower carbon emissions.

When rail and bus services are unavailable, passengers and airport workers often have little choice but to travel by car or taxi, placing additional pressure on surrounding road networks.

If the Stansted Express trial demonstrates sufficient demand, it could provide a blueprint for similar overnight rail services serving other UK airports, helping to deliver more seamless public transport connections that better reflect the realities of 24-hour aviation.
