For the third consecutive year, South Western Railway (SWR) has achieved a perfect score in the Safeguarding on Rail Scheme, earning praise from the British Transport Police for its efforts to protect vulnerable passengers and staff.
SWR has maintained its high standards by continuously updating and improving safeguarding measures, rather than relying on past practices.
Key Initiatives
Over the past year, the operator has:
Increased the use of body-worn cameras
Trained 51 colleagues as Safeguarding Champions
Launched Junior Citizen events
Developed outreach programs in partnership with Railway Children and the South Bank Business Improvement District
Co-hosted a National Safeguarding Conference
Held bi-monthly safeguarding meetings
All staff are required to complete safeguarding training, with refresher courses every two years, ensuring they are prepared to respond appropriately in a range of situations.
Recognition
Local Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood commented:
“Under public ownership, South Western Railway continues to lead the way in protecting passengers and staff on its network. This perfect score is a fantastic achievement and shows how using modern technology and working closely with BTP, local partners and charities is helping to make the rail network safer for everyone.”
