Second Isle of Man Mountain Road closure for spillage clean-up

A section of the Isle of Man TT course will be closed for resurfacing after initial works to remove a substance spilt by a contractor were unsuccessful.

The A18 Mountain Road will be shut from the Creg Ny Baa to the Bungalow from 18:00 BST for up to 24 hours, the Department of Infrastructure (DOI) has said.

It follows efforts to plane off a bitumous material from the carriageway on Wednesday.

The DOI said work on a 689ft (210m) stretch of the Ramsey-bound lane between Brandywell and Hailwood's Rise needs to be resurfaced to fix the issue.

The scope of the works would mean centre line and edge line markings as well as the roadside studs would need to be taken out and reinstated as part of the works, the department said.

The department said said "every effort" would be made to re-open the route late afternoon on Friday before the evening commuter run.

To enable the works to take place, resurfacing on the New Castletown Road in Santon would be suspended for the team to be redeployed to the Mountain Road.

Temporary traffic lights in Santon would be temporarily stood down until work could resume next week, with the temporary speed limit through the work to remain in place, it added.
