ScotRail has received industry recognition for its commitment to safety, security, and passenger welfare after achieving an impressive score in the latest Safer Railway Scheme assessment.

The assessment, conducted by the British Transport Police (BTP) and the Department for Transport (DfT), awarded the operator a score of 94%, reinforcing its position as a leader in safeguarding and public protection across the rail sector.

The evaluation highlighted ScotRail's ongoing efforts in several key areas, including tackling violence against women and girls, suicide prevention initiatives, public safety measures, partnership working, and employee wellbeing.

The recognition comes during Rail Safety Week, which runs from 15 to 21 June, as ScotRail launches its seasonal campaign encouraging customers to prioritise safety while travelling during the busy summer months.

Under the banner of its ‘Fit for Summer’ campaign, the train operator is urging passengers to prepare for journeys in advance, remain hydrated during warmer weather, consume alcohol responsibly, and seek assistance if they begin to feel unwell before boarding a train.

With increased numbers of people expected to travel for holidays, events, day trips, and social occasions, ScotRail is reminding customers that simple actions can contribute significantly to a safer railway environment.

Passengers who become unwell while at a station are encouraged to speak directly with staff or use available help points. ScotRail advises that obtaining assistance before boarding is often easier than seeking help once a train is in motion.

Throughout Rail Safety Week, the operator is promoting safety messages across its stations, trains, and digital platforms. Internal initiatives are also taking place to ensure employees remain healthy, alert, and prepared to support customers throughout the summer period.

Commenting on the achievement, Graeme Baillie, ScotRail's Safety and Sustainability Director, said:

“Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and we’re proud to have been recognised through the Safer Railway Scheme assessment.”

He highlighted the importance of collaboration across the railway industry, adding:

“We have strong partnerships with British Transport Police, Network Rail, and others across Scotland’s Railway to keep people safe, and customers have a role to play too.”

Baillie also emphasised the role passengers can play in supporting a safe travel environment.

“Whether it’s drinking sensibly, staying hydrated, or asking for help if you feel unwell, small actions can help keep everyone safe.”

As ScotRail's summer campaign gathers momentum, the operator hopes customers will embrace its safety-first message and contribute to a positive travel experience for everyone using the network.

Reinforcing that message, Baillie concluded:

“With our ‘Fit for Summer’ campaign now underway, our message is simple: travel well, travel safe, and help us keep Scotland’s Railway safe for everyone.”
