The Scottish Government has announced plans to invest more than £4 billion in transport during the next financial year, marking a significant boost for public and low-carbon travel across the country.

Under the draft 2026–27 Scottish Budget, £4.3bn has been earmarked for transport, with a record £2.7bn dedicated specifically to public transport. The funding package is designed to support climate action while improving travel options nationwide.

A further £316m will be directed towards sustainable travel and climate-positive initiatives, helping to encourage walking, wheeling and cycling for shorter journeys and supporting a wider shift towards greener modes of transport.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said the investment reflects Scotland’s commitment to cutting emissions and delivering a just transition to net zero by 2045. She confirmed that £85m will be allocated to new and ongoing low-carbon projects, including expanding the electric vehicle charging network and introducing further incentives to help households and businesses switch to EVs.

She added that the funding plans align with the First Minister’s priorities and the Programme for Government, guided by the National Transport Strategy, and underline the government’s determination to protect the climate while modernising Scotland’s transport system.
