The Roads and Local Transport Minister Guy Opperman has posted a short video on X explaining how the Government is planning to update streetworks regulations.

The consultation involves requiring at least 50% of any surplus lane rental funds to be spent on repairing potholes, raising the level of fixed penalty notices that can be issued for five street works offences and allowing overrun charges to apply at weekends and bank holidays.

In the video, Mr Opperman says the Government is: “Easing congestion by creating Lane Rental Schemes that allow 50% of that money to go back to local authorities to fix local roads.

“We’re also penalising utility companies by £10,000 if they go over into weekends and we’re doubling the fines that happen if… they work without a permit.”

Mr Opperman also talks about the £8.3 billion going into road repairs and how Digital Traffic Regulation Orders will improve traffic information.

“All of this wraps up as a plan for drivers where we are getting behind the driver and genuinely putting them in the driving seat,” he concludes.
