New Incursion Awareness campaign launched to promote safer roads across southwest Scotland

Amey’s Scottish southwest trunk roads unit is launching a critical road safety campaign to combat the growing threat of driver incursions into roadworks.

With over ninety incursions recorded since January 2024, this campaign sends a powerful message - roadworkers are real people with families who rely on them, and their safety is at risk every day.

Recent data highlights the growing risk to roadworkers, with over 90 incursions into roadworks recorded between January 2024 and February 2025 on Scotland’s South-West Trunk Road Network.

Many incidents involved vehicles breaching safety barriers, ignoring red lights, or violating temporary speed restrictions, putting roadworkers’ lives in immediate danger.

Amey said,

"Our roadworkers risk their lives daily to maintain and improve Scotland’s roads, but reckless incursions are making their job even more dangerous.

"This campaign is a wake-up call, every incursion could lead to a life-changing or fatal accident.

"We urge all drivers to respect road safety measures, follow signage, and drive responsibly. A moment of impatience is not worth a life.

Drivers who ignore safety rules face:

  • Fines of up to £2,500.

  • Penalty points or disqualification.

  • The risk of causing serious injury or death.

  • A criminal conviction!

Motorists, businesses, and communities are encouraged to share campaign messages and find out more about our work at www.swtrunkroads.scot.
