Saxon Street (B4034) in Bletchley will be closed for a week from 07:00 GMT on 12 January until late afternoon on 18 January to allow preparatory work for a railway bridge that will later be rebuilt as part of the East West Rail project.

During the closure, engineers will carry out ground investigation surveys and vegetation clearance to support the design and construction of a replacement bridge. The current bridge, built in the 1970s, is nearing the end of its service life and requires upgrading to meet future rail demands.

Edmund Waddelove, senior sponsor for Network Rail, described the work as “vital… needed to keep the bridge safe and reliable for many years to come.” He added that the bridge is an essential part of the route, supporting both future passenger and freight services on East West Rail.

The new structure will improve capacity significantly. While the existing bridge carries a single track, the replacement will be wide enough for two tracks and able to accommodate freight trains. Surveys are critical for finalising the design of this modernised bridge.

During the road closure, a clearly signposted diversion route will be in place, and pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open throughout the works. In addition, new road markings and lines will be painted along Saxon Street as part of the project.

Network Rail, together with its East West Rail Alliance partners, has informed local residents and businesses of the planned closure and is coordinating closely with Milton Keynes City Council. Waddelove thanked road users and business owners in advance for their patience.

Once completed, the East West Rail route will provide a direct rail connection linking Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford, and Cambridge, supporting enhanced travel and freight transport across the region.
