West Mercia Police have issued a reminder to farmers and agricultural contractors to take extra care in keeping roads free from mud and debris as wetter autumn weather sets in.
The force’s Road Safety Team told the Hereford Times that heavy rainfall and increased fieldwork at this time of year often lead to tractors and other farm machinery depositing mud on rural routes, creating potential dangers for other road users.
Farmers and contractors are being urged to clean their vehicles before joining public highways to prevent mud being carried onto the road surface.
“Excess mud can be extremely dangerous – it affects how vehicles handle, increases the risk of skidding, and poses particular hazards for motorcyclists and cyclists,” a police spokesperson said.“Any incidents of mud on the road causing an issue can be reported to the relevant local highways authority, or if this poses an immediate danger, call 101.”
Officers also advised motorists to slow down and increase their following distance if they come across muddy stretches of road, as grip and visibility can both be compromised.
