OFFICERS are urging Essex drivers to take care on the roads, after tackling a busy month of road safety.

In March, roads policing officers for Essex Police dealt with 165 mobile phone offences, 177 drink and drug driver arrests, and 348 drivers caught not wearing a seatbelt.

These offences are known within the force as 'the fatal five'.

In total, 386 drivers were prosecuted throughout March for careless driving.

Essex Police regularly hold Operation Scalis, which are dedicated 'days of action' focusing on targeting uninsured vehicles.

Throughout the month, 474 uninsured vehicles were seized across Essex.

A total of 7,685 road safety educational courses were delivered in March, aiming to instil the consequences of 'poor and dangerous' driving.

Through the efforts of volunteers in Community Speedwatch, who monitor speeds in their local area, 929 speed warning letters were sent to motorists.

Mr Adam Pipe, head of Essex Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Road safety is a force priority so we can keep you safe.

"We need to work together to stamp out dangerous driving and target those responsible.

“We won’t hesitate to take action, our figures for March show that, but we’d love our communities support us so we can achieve more.”
