North Yorkshire Council is introducing new preventative road maintenance techniques in a bid to extend the life of its highways network while facing a projected £20 million funding shortfall over the next four years.

For the first time, the authority is deploying Reclamite, a specialist surface treatment designed to rejuvenate ageing asphalt before potholes develop. Applied as a spray treatment, the technology is expected to extend a road's lifespan by up to five years, while reducing maintenance costs by as much as 40% compared with traditional resurfacing.

The treatment, supplied by Roadtechs, also offers environmental benefits by reducing waste, cutting carbon emissions and minimising disruption for road users.

Alongside Reclamite, the council is expanding the use of preventative techniques including retexturing, inlay patchingand recycled construction materials as it seeks to maximise value from its highways budget.

Despite investing around £28 million in carriageway improvements across its 5,800-mile road network this year, the authority warns future maintenance programmes will be constrained by changes to regional funding allocations through the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Councillor Malcolm Taylor, North Yorkshire Council's Executive Member for Highways and Transportation, said innovation was becoming increasingly important as the authority works to maintain one of England's largest local road networks under significant financial pressure.

Council Leader Carl Les added that while additional Government investment in highways was welcome, changes to the funding formula meant North Yorkshire would receive around £20 million less over four years than under the previous allocation model, limiting the number of schemes that can be delivered despite the adoption of new maintenance technologies.
