A safety scheme which targets busy roads near Kent schools is being rolled out in Medway.
Roads outside seven schools will be closed to vehicles at pick up and drop off times as part of the School Streets programme.
Restrictions in designated streets will mean only pedestrians and cyclists can use the roads during the affected times.
Labour councillor Tristan Osborne, head of community safety and enforcement on Medway Council, said the School Streets scheme will improve safety and air quality.
Vehicles with an exemption will be able to use the roads, while those already parked can stay there.
The restrictions will not be in place during school holidays or weekends.
Following a public consultation last year, the School Streets scheme has been introduced at:
*Burnt Oak Primary School, Cornwall Road, Gillingham
*Greenvale Primary School, Symons Avenue, Chatham
*Miers Court Primary School, Silverspot Close, Rainham
*Phoenix Primary School, Glencoe Road, Chatham
*St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Greenfield Road, Gillingham
*St Peter's Infant School, Holcombe Road, Rochester
*St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Bleakwood Road, Walderslade
Mr Osbourne said: “The restrictions will take a while to get used to...but ultimately there are benefits for everyone, from drivers around Medway to school users and residents.”
Medway Council got £486,000 from the government’s Active Travel Fund for the scheme.
