A new National Highways depot has been given the green light by South Derbyshire District Council, to be located near the A38/A50 Toyota Roundabout.
The purpose-built site will act as a central base for winter road gritting, vehicle upkeep, and emergency responses. It will employ around 50 staff and accommodate six gritters.
Operating around the clock, the compound will include office space, a workshop, fuel and cleaning facilities, and a large salt barn. National Highways says the new centre will allow quicker mobilisation for gritting, snow clearance, and severe weather responses, helping to keep vital routes open within strict service timeframes.
Although some local residents raised issues over traffic, potential noise, and 24-hour use, council officers decided the scheme’s economic and operational advantages outweigh the concerns. The project is also expected to bring indirect benefits to the local economy as staff spend in nearby businesses.
The development is part of a broader programme of investment in transport infrastructure, aimed at improving resilience, efficiency, and support for local communities while maintaining essential routes.
