South Yorkshire is set to reach a major milestone in April with the opening of the Magna Tram Train station—the first new stop added to the network since its launch in 2018.
The station will open to passengers on 9 April, providing improved access to the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham while strengthening transport links between Rotherham and Sheffield.
Located near Templeborough and Tinsley, the new stop is expected to enhance connectivity to key employment areas within the Lower Don Valley. The surrounding corridor supports a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, logistics and green technology, and improved transport access is expected to support workforce mobility and economic growth.
The project also aims to address long-standing congestion and air quality issues in the area, particularly along the A6178 corridor. A new Park and Ride facility, offering 100 free spaces, alongside cycle storage and electric vehicle charging, is intended to encourage more sustainable travel and reduce pressure on nearby routes, including Junction 34 of the M1.
Despite being built on heavy rail infrastructure, the station has been designed to meet modern accessibility standards. Features include step-free access via lifts, accessible platforms and a new pedestrian overbridge, ensuring ease of use for all passengers.
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard described the opening as a significant step forward for the region’s transport ambitions:
“The opening of Magna station is a proud moment for South Yorkshire and a clear example of the progress we are making in building a more connected public transport network.”
Transport leaders say the new station will play an important role in supporting regeneration across the Don Valley, with further developments planned in the area, including the proposed Templeborough Business Zone and the future Rotherham Gateway Station.
The £10.1 million scheme has been delivered by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram, with funding provided through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
The opening also forms part of wider plans to expand the region’s tram network, with feasibility studies under way to explore future extensions aimed at connecting more communities across South Yorkshire.
