National Highways has announced plans to acquire an incursion warning radar system for traffic officer vehicles, with the contract valued at up to £5 million.

The system is designed to work alongside wearable devices worn by traffic officers, alerting them when a vehicle is dangerously close. This technology will help prevent accidents, enhance officer safety, and reduce the risk of serious injuries on busy roadways. The system is expected to be fitted to all 400 traffic officer vehicles operating across the national road network, covering motorways and key A-roads.

Key features of the contract are likely to include:

  • Production and supply of radar devices compatible with officer vehicles and wearables

  • Installation and fitment to traffic officer vehicles (or self-fit by National Highways)

  • Calibration of devices to ensure accurate detection

  • Software servicing and updates for the duration of the contract

By equipping the full fleet, National Highways aims to achieve several wider benefits:

  • Improved road safety: Early warnings reduce the likelihood of collisions between traffic officers and vehicles, keeping officers and road users safe.

  • Faster incident response: Alerts allow officers to react more quickly in high-risk situations, helping to clear accidents and disruptions more efficiently.

  • Enhanced traffic flow: By reducing the frequency and severity of collisions near work zones or active traffic management areas, congestion can be minimised, improving journey times for all road users.

  • Operational resilience: The system provides officers with real-time situational awareness, supporting safer maintenance, enforcement, and emergency operations.

The procurement process is scheduled to take place between April and September 2026, with the contract running from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2031, and a potential extension to 2035, giving a total possible duration of nine years.

Suppliers wishing to participate must engage with National Highways by 23 November 2025, with the formal tender expected to be published by 1 March 2026.

More information about the contract and requirements is available on the National Highways website.
