National Highways swings into action to improve town park

Fun times are on the way for children in one Shropshire town after National Highways donated almost £10,000 towards the cost of new playground equipment.

The wooden equipment on an adventure playground at Brooksbury had to be removed earlier this year because it had fallen into a state of disrepair and was no longer considered safe.

Church Stretton Town Council had been fundraising to replace the equipment at the Brooksbury Recreation Ground but was struggling to reach its target.

National Highways, which has been carrying out essential resurfacing work along the A49 in Church Stretton, offered to help and has funded two large pieces of accessible play equipment including a set of swings.

National Highways Route Manager, Joseph Walmsley, said:

“We know that our roadworks, though important, can be disruptive for local communities so we like to give something back if we can and leave a positive legacy.

“When we heard about the issues at the recreation ground we worked closely with the Town Council to see how we could help and agreed to provided funding of £9,673 for the two pieces of play equipment.

“It is wonderful news that families will soon be having fun on this new and improved play area and we’re proud to play our part in creating a more inclusive, safe and enjoyable space for the community.”

Mayor of Church Stretton, Councillor Andy Munro, said:

“Working with National Highways has been a real partnership and we have been really pleased with the way in which National Highways listened to the town’s concerns. This allowed us to help shape how the work was completed and residents are united in reporting that the project was completed really smoothly.

“Play equipment is important, it is key to both physical and mental development and allows all children to play without reference to their economic circumstances. This donation from National Highways will help us to make this play park even better and more inclusive.”

National Highways completed the main construction work on the A49 earlier this month, a week ahead of schedule. The road surface had deteriorated to the point where a complete reconstruction was needed.

The newly-constructed carriageway means safer and more reliable journeys for drivers and has reduced the need for maintenance and emergency repairs.
