National Highways have put forward a plan to close the A66 in North Yorkshire for two months, as the full extent of the roadworks has been revealed.
The road agency has confirmed that the A66 Trunk Road between Scotch Corner and Hartforth will be closed in part from July 1 for two months, or until the work are complete.
According to National Highways, the stretch of road will be closed for 24 hours a day - but will be in stages to allow drivers to not be fully impacted by the roadworks.
The proposed works will involve closing the A66 westbound and Eastbound from Scotch Corner Roundabout to Melsonby Crossover - where traffic will be diverted onto the opposite carriageway using a contraflow system.
Additional work will involve closing the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from Melsonby Crossover to Hartforth Junction, which will involve contraflow.
Other measures include:
Close the laybys adjacent to the above carriageways
Ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways at its junction with Melsonby Crossroads and Winston Crossroads
Impose a temporary 30mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageway from Scotch Corner to Melsonby Crossover
Impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageway from Melsonby Crossover to Hartforth Junction
Close the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Winston Junction to the entry slip road at Melsonby Junction
Impose a 10mph and 30mph speed limit on the A66 eastbound and westbound between Winston Junction and Melsonby Junction.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "Traffic management will be in force and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles or vehicles connected to the works).
"Access will be maintained to premises and property which are accessible from, and only from the A66."
