National Highways has released a significant update on the ongoing M27 resurfacing project, confirming when the current 50mph speed restriction will be raised to 60mph, according to the Daily Echo.

Motorists are being asked to remain patient as crews continue major resurfacing work between junctions 5 and 7, which will ultimately deliver a low-noise road surface along one of Hampshire’s busiest stretches of motorway.

Richard Scrase, Programme Delivery Manager at National Highways, provided insight into the current phase of works, which focuses on strengthening the road’s infrastructure for long-term resilience.

“We are currently working in the verge on the westbound carriageway undertaking drainage repairs to make sure it will work for the next 40 years,” he explained.“We’re also lifting the infrastructure in the verge by 180 millimetres so it will match the new level of the road.”

The next milestone will see construction teams laying new asphalt in lanes one and two by the end of the year. However, Scrase confirmed these lanes will remain closed over the Christmas period, with traffic adjustments planned in early 2026.

Once resurfacing and drainage improvements are completed, traffic will be realigned to restore three lanes in each direction. The project will then progress to phase four, reinstating the central concrete barrier.

A testing phase will follow, lasting several months, to ensure all technology — including overhead signage, speed monitoring, and stopped-vehicle detection systems — is fully operational. During this phase, the speed limit will be increased to 60mph, which is expected to take effect by the end of May.

Mr Scrase noted that adverse weather could still affect the schedule but said contingency measures are in place to minimise disruption. He also warned of upcoming overnight closures at junctions 4, 5, and 7 over the coming months, with more information to be shared closer to the dates.
