More Than ⅔ of the UK Admits to Speeding in the Past

A survey conducted by JMW Solicitors has revealed that around two thirds of UK drivers have broken speed limits.

Out of 1,420 respondents, over 1,000 (71%) stated they have broken speed limits, with 95 (7%) admitting to doing so regularly, and only 414 (29%) declaring that they have never driven over the speed limit.

When asked why they sped, respondents’ common answers included confidence or ignorance about their safety, lacking attention and lateness.

When comparing the differences between the sexes, it is clear to see that there is little deviation, with 69% of female respondents admitting to speeding compared to 73% of males.

A difference can be seen in the statistics surrounding the ages of drivers, however, as 82% of the respondents aged 18 - 24 admitted to speeding regularly or in the past, while the lowest age group to admit to speeding was those aged 65+ (63%). Despite the second lowest group being drivers aged 25 - 34 (64%), this age range also had the highest number of respondents who admitted that they still speed regularly, at 8%.

On this revelation, Hojol Uddin, Partner in Motoring Offences at JMW Solicitors stated: “There are a number of factors that can lead drivers to break speed limits, but few of them, if any, are acceptable in the eyes of the law. However, laws should be adaptable to suit the requirements of those who are affected by them, within reason. Assessing the need for restrictive speed limits may reveal that they are, in fact, too strict in certain areas. Making such changes may result in better logistics and a reduction in unnecessary charges for UK drivers, whilst maintaining the safety of our roads.”
