Two key routes in northern Lincolnshire are set to undergo full reconstruction as part of a multi-billion-pound government programme aimed at improving England’s road network.

The Department for Transport has outlined plans to invest £27 billion over the next five years through its Road Investment Strategy (RIS3), with a focus on modernising and maintaining major roads across the country.

As part of the scheme, significant works will take place on the A180 between the Brocklesby and Barnetby interchanges, as well as on a section of the M180 between junctions two and three. Both routes are important links for regional traffic, particularly for access to major ports such as Immingham and Grimsby.

Additional funding will also be allocated to repair bridge structures on the M62 near Goole and Airmyn in East Yorkshire.

The A180, which is constructed from concrete, has long been criticised by drivers for its noisy surface. The planned works are expected to address these issues while improving the overall condition and resilience of the route.

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood described the programme as a significant step forward for road users, highlighting its potential to improve journeys and support regional connectivity.

Under RIS3, National Highways aims to resurface a substantial portion of the strategic road network, targeting ageing infrastructure and enhancing safety for motorists.

Elliot Shaw, executive director at National Highways, said the investment would play a key role in supporting economic activity by ensuring vital transport links remain reliable and efficient.
