M5 death after man falls from bridge near Bristol - Police appealing for witnesses


A man has died after falling from a bridge above the M5 near Bristol.


Long delays and queueing traffic were reported on January 24 on the M5 Northbound between J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way in Clevedon and J19 A369 Martcombe Road, Portishead.

Police held traffic on the motorway and the northbound carriageway was closed as officers carried out their investigation.


A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said:


"The section of the motorway is likely to be closed for a considerable amount of time and so we’d advise motorists to use an alternative route.


"It follows the sudden death of a man who is believed to have fallen onto the carriageway from an overbridge at approximately 12.20pm.


Webcam footage from National Highways showed near-stationary traffic in the affected area of the M5 northbound.


A diversion route was put in place by to direct motorists onto an alternative route away from the affected area and as of 2pm all lanes had reopened.


The incident was the second of its type inside a week on that particular stretch of road.
