The 'serious' collision happened close to the M25 turn-off for Heathrow on Thursday morning.
A person has died after a crash on the M4, near Heathrow Airport.
The incident closed the London bound section from Junction 5 to Junction 4B earlier this morning (January 27).
Police attended the scene and the M4 closure is remained in place "for some time" while work was carried out the scene. The motorway reopened after a number of hours.
Motorists were advised to use alternative routes and to allow plenty of extra journey time, with diversions put in place.
All traffic was initially temporarily held at around 5.10am this morning and queues of vehicles began to build from then onwards.
Junction 5 is the A4 London Road turn-off for Langley and Staines and Junction 4B is the M25 turn-off for Heathrow Airport.
Senior Investigating Officer Sergeant Matt Cadmore of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, based at Taplow, said: “This was a tragic incident which has very sadly resulted in the death of a female pedestrian.
“I am appealing to anybody who was driving on the M4 at around the time of the collision to please check their dash-cam footage and contact Thames Valley Police if it has captured anything that can assist this investigation.
“I would also urge anybody who saw the female on the carriageway in the moments leading up to the collision, or who witnessed the incident, to please get in touch."
“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the victim’s next of kin, and that remains one of our top priorities at this time.”
Despite being a Smart Motorway, Safer Highways understands that this particular stretch of carriageway was not in fact all lane running at the time of the incident.
