Bridge Joint Failure: Drivers face severe delays and seven mile tail backs

Drivers in Yorkshire are facing severe delays due to a damaged bridge joint.

Traffic on the M18 in South Yorkshire is backing up for almost five miles due to congestion caused by the issue, National Highways said. The government owned company has closed two of the three lanes on the motorway, near junction five, while the issue is rectified.

A statement from National Highways’ Yorkshire team said: “There are two lanes closed on the westbound carriageway between J1 (Thorne) and the M18, after a damaged bridge joint was found yesterday on the roundabout at J5 M18. For safety reasons, the lanes one and two are closed on the southern quadrant at the junction 5 on the M18 Interchange and will remain in place throughout the day today.

It was unable to provide a time estimation as to what time the repair will be carried out.

Drivers in the area are strongly advised to find an alternative route and plan their journeys.
