Transport for London (TfL) has awarded M Group a major five-year contract to maintain its bridges and civil structures, with the option to extend the agreement by a further three years.

The contract was awarded following a competitive tender conducted under the Competitive Flexible Procedure of the Procurement Act 2023. M Group Transport (Rail and Aviation) was selected as the preferred bidder to deliver essential maintenance services across TfL’s railway infrastructure.

Valued at approximately £99.2 million excluding VAT (£119 million including VAT), the contract will begin on 1 April 2026 and run until 31 March 2031. If extended, it could continue through to 31 March 2034. The investment reflects TfL’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety, reliability and longevity of the capital’s rail network, particularly the bridges and civil structures that underpin daily operations.

Under the agreement, M Group will provide both planned preventative and reactive maintenance services, excluding trackside works. The scope includes the application of protective coatings to brick, masonry, concrete and steel assets to protect against corrosion and deterioration. Non-trackside vegetation management will also be carried out to prevent overgrowth that could pose safety risks or hinder access.

The programme covers a wide range of safety-critical interventions, including maintenance of brick tunnels, covered ways, girders and cable-related infrastructure such as cable posts and stiles. Activities will include replacing defective cable posts, undertaking cyclical four-year asset interventions, maintaining cable draw pits and renewing identification plates to support effective asset management.

Reactive maintenance and rapid fault response form a key part of the contract, ensuring emerging issues are addressed quickly to reduce disruption and mitigate safety risks. Inspection planning and associated support services will also be delivered to maintain strong oversight of asset condition and compliance.

The procurement process attracted three bidders, with M Group selected ahead of Spoor-Tech and Millcroft Services following a detailed evaluation of technical capability, value for money and alignment with TfL’s long-term infrastructure resilience strategy.
