A third of all London’s boroughs are now participating in the e-scooter trials, Transport for London (TfL) has announced.

The latest borough to join the scheme is Wandsworth Council, adding 35 km² to the trial’s area size and bringing its total to 300 km².

E-scooters will be available to hire from 170 dedicated parking bays across Wandsworth as of today, with the trial run by Transport for London (TfL) and shared micromobility operators Lime and Voi.

“We’re pleased to launch Lime e-scooters in Wandsworth, expanding access to sustainable transport in another London borough. Lime now operates over 2,000 e-scooters across the capital, with up to 300 set to be deployed in Wandsworth once the scheme is fully up and running,” Lime General Manager Kaan Taş told Zag Daily.

“This latest expansion reflects growing momentum behind London’s e-scooter trials, and it’s clear that demand for low-carbon, convenient transport is accelerating. Lime remains committed to investing in London for the long term.”

New data released by TfL finds that five million rental e-scooter trips have taken place since the trial’s initial launch in 2021. This totals more than 10 million kilometres travelled.

TfL also found that 0.0004% of rental e-scooter trips resulted in serious injury and that the injury risk rate decreased year-on-year over the trial’s first three years of operation. This contributes to a larger European trend, with Micro-Mobility for Europe finding that the number of fatal or serious injuries on e-scooters requiring medical treatment dropped nearly 30% in 2024 from 2021.

E-scooters are only legal to ride in London as part of the capital’s rental trials.

The London trial is contracted to run until 25 September 2025 with the possibility of extensions of up to one year.

All e-scooter journeys in Wandsworth must start and end in a dedicated parking bay, and users must hold a valid UK driving license to rent an e-scooter. Both Voi and Lime are offering free helmets available to collect from Wandsworth Town Hall.

Helmet use has long been a discussion point in the shared micromobility industry. Remi Kuti, Founder of safety tech startup Urban Shield, recently explored whether the rider, operator or the government should be liable for the use of helmets.

James Bolton, Voi’s UK General Manager said: “As one of London’s biggest boroughs, with its close-knit community and vibrant high streets, Voi is thrilled to launch our e-scooters in Wandsworth, offering more Londoners a safe, green and affordable way to move around the Capital.

“We’re 100 per cent committed to running a responsible pilot that keeps pavements clear. Safety is Voi’s top priority – we’re committed to rider training, high-quality vehicles, and working with the community to create a scheme that works for everyone.”
