Londoners will be able to travel on buses and trams all day at weekends this summer for the cost of a single £1.75 fare under a new initiative announced by Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan.

The temporary scheme, running between 25 July and 31 August 2026, will extend Transport for London’s existing Hopper fare by removing the current one-hour transfer limit on weekends.

Under the new offer, passengers will be able to make unlimited bus and tram journeys throughout the entire day after paying a single fare.

TfL says the initiative is designed to help ease pressure from the rising cost of living while also encouraging more people to use public transport during the busy summer holiday period.

The existing Hopper fare, introduced in 2016, currently allows unlimited bus and tram transfers within one hour of the first journey for a flat £1.75 charge.

Since its launch, TfL says passengers have made more than one billion Hopper journeys across the capital.

Helping Families and Encouraging Public Transport Use

City Hall said the expanded summer offer could provide noticeable savings for families and passengers making multiple trips across London during weekends, although no official estimate of potential savings has been released.

Buses remain the most heavily used form of public transport in London, with the vast majority of households located within walking distance of a bus stop.

The Mayor said the initiative forms part of wider efforts to make transport more affordable and accessible while supporting leisure travel and local economies during the summer months.

TfL has also launched a promotional campaign for the initiative, including specially branded buses featuring colourful frog-themed artwork highlighting the extended Hopper fare offer.

The designs have been applied to buses operating on routes 23, 49 and 295 across the capital.

The move comes as transport authorities continue looking at ways to encourage greater use of public transport amid wider economic pressures and changing travel patterns across the city.
