Local Govt Association speaks on 10-year Infrastructure Strategy
POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2025
Responding to the Government’s announcement of its 10-year Infrastructure Strategy, Councillor Adam Hug, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Local Infrastructure and Net Zero Board, said the strategy would bring essential long-term certainty for local government, industry, and businesses as they plan for the future of critical infrastructure.
He explained that such certainty would allow councils and combined authorities to attract investment, create employment opportunities, and improve public services through consistent, long-term funding commitments.
Councillor Hug welcomed the Government’s recognition of the nearly £17 billion backlog in local road repairs. He stressed that councils responsible for maintaining local roads must receive the clear majority of the £24 billion allocated for road infrastructure over the next five years and beyond, in order to enhance the resilience of the local network and deliver better value for money. He also highlighted the importance of the new £1 billion Structures Fund, noting it would address a significant gap in funding for the repair of bridges, flyovers, and collapsed roads.
He concluded by stating that councils are keen to collaborate with the new National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority to bring the strategy to life and ensure it aligns with major local infrastructure schemes.
