Veteran transport leader Leon Daniels OBE has been named the new Chair of the National Transport Trust, with his appointment due to take effect in May.

Daniels brings extensive industry experience to the role, having spent more than 30 years working across the UK transport sector in a variety of senior leadership positions. He is also recognised as a founding member of the Highways Sector Council, reflecting his longstanding involvement in shaping the industry.

During his career, Daniels has held a number of influential roles. These include Managing Director of Capital Citybus for seven years, followed by 13 years as Commercial Director for UK Bus at FirstGroup. He later joined Transport for London (TfL), where he served for more than six years as Managing Director of Surface Transport, overseeing London’s extensive bus, road and transport network.

Since stepping down from his role at TfL in 2017, Daniels has remained active within the sector, offering strategic guidance and consultancy to a range of organisations. His advisory work has included supporting government bodies and transport operators such as Thames Clippers, RATPDEV and FirstGroup.

Taking Over from Long-Serving Chair

Daniels will replace Stuart Wilkinson, who has chaired the National Transport Trust for nearly two decades.

During his 19-year tenure, Wilkinson played a pivotal role in expanding the Trust’s profile and influence. He also guided the organisation through a key transition, including the rebranding from the Transport Trust to the National Transport Trust, reflecting its growing national reach and role.

Warm Welcome from the Trust

Lady Judy McAlpine, President of the National Transport Trust, welcomed the appointment and praised Daniels’ track record in the transport industry.

She said his career has demonstrated a consistent ability to deliver results at senior levels across both the private and public sectors. According to McAlpine, Daniels’ experience and knowledge of the transport landscape will be invaluable as the Trust continues to develop its work.

She also expressed gratitude to Wilkinson for his long service and dedication to the organisation, acknowledging the significant impact he has had on the Trust’s development over many years.

Continuing a Legacy of Transport Heritage

Speaking about his appointment, Daniels said he felt honoured to be invited to lead the organisation.

He highlighted the important role the National Transport Trust has played for more than 60 years in promoting and safeguarding the UK’s transport heritage. Daniels added that he is eager to work with the Trust’s team and supporters to build on its achievements and help shape its future direction.

Looking ahead, he said he hopes to support the organisation in developing a clear strategy that will strengthen its work and ensure the Trust continues to champion the preservation and recognition of the nation’s transport history for decades to come.
