A central York bridge is set to be closed for two months next year for urgent repair work after authorities identified significant corrosion and deterioration on the cast-iron structure.

The £1.9 million project will affect Lendal Bridge, a Grade II listed Victorian bridge spanning the River Ouse between Station Road and Museum Street. Vehicle traffic will be prohibited for eight weeks starting April 2026, though pedestrian access will remain open throughout the works.

City of York Council plans to resurface the carriageway and footpaths, re-waterproof the structure, and carry out repairs that will protect the bridge’s long-term load capacity, reduce emergency maintenance, and prevent more costly interventions in the future. According to council reports, the bridge currently suffers from life-expired surfacing, failed waterproofing, and extensive corrosion.

Following detailed assessments, the council determined that full closure to vehicles and cyclists while maintaining pedestrian access, combined with 24/7 working, would be the most efficient approach, ensuring minimal disruption and a high-quality repair.

Additional non-essential work may include repainting all metalwork during the maintenance period.

Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport, said:

“Lendal Bridge is a heavily used route at the heart of our city centre and is in need of essential repairs. Fixing the bridge now will safeguard this vital link for decades to come.”
