Kier Highways mobilises £160m Highways England Area 4 contract

Kier Highways has today completed the mobilisation of its new eight year £160m Highways England Area 4 maintenance and response contract.

The mobilisation period took place over three months for the contract which covers Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex. Kier will be responsible for maintaining 130km of motorways (M2, M20 and M23), 320km of trunk road and over 1000 structures, including Medway Viaduct, the A20 Roundhill Tunnel and the A27 Southwick Tunnel.

The contract includes routine and cyclical maintenance, incident response, defect rectification and severe weather delivery on the trunk roads and motorways within Area 4. It will also include maintenance of roadside technology and the provision of traffic management for the contractor’s maintenance and response activities.

Phil Samms, Area 4 general manager, said “The relatively short three-month mobilisation of Area 4 M&R has been delivered in difficult circumstances and the success is testament to the excellent relationships already forged between Kier, Highways England and the supply chain. It has also been supported by the knowledge and experience of the existing staff in Area 4. Throughout the contract, collaborative working between Kier, Highways England and the supply chain will be key, and our focus will be on working safely, reliable delivery and meeting customer expectations.”

Joe Incutti, group managing director for Kier Highways, said: “I am delighted to welcome our new colleagues in Area 4 to Kier, and I would like to thank the Area 4 team for successfully mobilising this contract so quickly. We look forward to building upon our collaborative working relationships with Highways England and the supply chain in this Area, and playing our part in the successful role out of Asset Delivery across the strategic road network”

Kier Highways manages, maintains and improves over 30,000km of local authority and strategic roads. In the South East region, it has recently completed construction of two motorway upgrade projects on the M20 (junctions 3-5) and M23 (junctions 8-10), which are now open to road users. Currently, Kier operates three other Highways England maintenance contracts in Area 3 (South East), Area 9 (West Midlands) and Area 13 (North West).
