JCB powers up first hydrogen fuelled digger

JCB has built the world’s first prototype hydrogen-powered excavator.

Jo Bamford and father Sir Anthony team up to create world's first hydrogen-fuelled digger

Power for the 20t excavator is generated by reacting hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel cell to create the energy needed to run electric motors.

The machine is the brainchild of JCB chairman Anthony and his son Jo, who runs fuel producer Ryse Hydrogen and hydrogen bus maker Wrightbus.

The 220X excavator has been undergoing rigorous testing at JCB’s quarry proving grounds.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “In the coming months JCB will continue to develop and refine this technology with advanced testing of our prototype machine and we will continue to be at the forefront of technologies designed to build a zero carbon future.”

Jo Bamford said: “I truly believe hydrogen is the UK’s best opportunity to build a world-leading industry, which creates UK jobs, cuts emissions and is the envy of the globe.”
