For five decades, Highway Care’s success has been built on the talent and dedication of its team.
People have come and gone, as they will in any business down the years, but a key element of remaining commercially sustainable has been our willingness to invest in future talent.
And our new commercial assistant, Annie Boyd, is a great example of that philosophy.
Annie has joined us as a recent graduate, with some (very) real world experience under her belt after working as a call handler in the Police emergency response team.
But it’s not Annie’s most recent job, nor her degree in law that lie at the heart of her career ambition: she wants to become a quantity surveyor (QS). Here at Highway Care, we know talent where we see it and we are excited to provide her with the training and support she needs to become a QS.
Commercial assistant is a new role at Highway Care, designed to support our business development and customer service as we continue to grow. But it’s not just an opportunity for the company to develop; it’s also an opportunity for Annie to learn about the business across multiple departments.
Reporting into our QS, Nick Carey, Annie will also support our business development and customer services teams, giving her a broad, 3600 understanding of our company and our customers’ requirements.
Annie will become fully immersed in our sector, already being thrown in at the deep end at Highways UK this year. She will learn how we operate providing a solid foundation for her future career, alongside studies for a HNC in construction, which will be funded by the company. She will be the latest in a line of apprentices, trainees and graduates that we have supported and nurtured to develop their careers with us, across all departments.
We are innovators, and that mindset of seeking out potential and investing in developing it lies at the heart of innovation. Annie has a strong mathematical brain, which gives her a key element of the skills base she will need as a QS. She is also a confident person and a great communicator, which will ensure she can understand customers’ needs, deal effectively with our supply chain partners and engage with colleagues across the business. Just as we do when we’re developing a product, we have identified what’s required and established a route to achieving the outcome we’re aiming for.
Lots of companies say that people are their greatest asset. At Highway Care, we are a relatively small team, taking on the huge task of keeping people and places safer. We do that through innovative solutions for a safer future and it’s a guiding principle that pervades every aspect of our business – not just products and operations but training and professional development too. We wish Annie every success in her career, and we will be there to support her all the way.
