Hull City Council has appointed Mason Clark Associates, a Hull-based engineering consultancy, to progress works on Sutton Road flyover.

A principal inspection carried out in October 2020 revealed extensive concrete spalling on the soffit and exposure of the deck’s main reinforcement.

Therefore, to maintain safety and reliability, the council needs to implement a comprehensive strengthening scheme on the structure – which crosses over the TransPennine Trail – between Leads Road and Gillshill Road.

The recent appointment of Mason Clark Associates will help the council progress with the strengthening works.  To support the council, Mason Clark Associates will focus on undertaking structural surveys, engaging with stakeholders, and developing detailed designs for the future strengthening works.

Building works to strengthen the flyover will follow once this preliminary work is complete.

Having previously delivered principal inspections and feasibility studies, Mason Clark Associates bring extensive knowledge of the structure to this project.

This appointment is another key step in the council’s five-year infrastructure plan, which aims to maintain capacity of the flyover in the long-term.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “Sutton Road flyover plays a strategically vital role in Hull’s transport network, forming part of the eastern ring road and supporting thousands of journeys each day.

“The appointment of Mason Clark Associates is an important step in maintaining the condition of the structure and ensuring this key route remains safe and usable.

“Part of our wider commitment to fixing the city’s infrastructure, this scheme will add 120 years of life to the structure, making it reliable for years to come.”

Andy Thompson, director of bridges at Mason Clark Associates, said: “As a local specialist bridge engineering consultant with extensive knowledge of the structure, we’re proud to be supporting Hull City Council on this important project.

“Our team is committed to extending the life of the Sutton Road flyover, ensuring it continues to serve the people of Hull.”
