On 29 January 2026, the UK rail freight sector saw a significant development with the official launch of Heavy Haul Rail Limited as an independent company.
This follows the sale of Freightliner UK’s Intermodal Logistics division, allowing Heavy Haul Rail to concentrate exclusively on the bulk freight market and leverage over 25 years of operational expertise.
As a standalone entity, Heavy Haul Rail now moves 17 million tonnes of bulk freight each year, serving industries such as energy, construction, and manufacturing. The company also supports rail infrastructure projects, maintenance work, and provides services to passenger operators and rolling stock companies, including driver staffing and route management.
CEO Dave Penney commented:"Transitioning from the Freightliner Intermodal Business presents an exciting opportunity to relaunch Heavy Haul Rail as a new entity. Our ambition is to become the UK’s leading bulk rail freight partner, recognized for innovation, reliability, and a commitment to sustainable transport. We aim to help industries and communities by shifting more freight from congested roads onto efficient, low-emission rail."
Heavy Haul Rail operates a fleet of 95 locomotives and over 1,000 wagons, supported by a workforce of 950 staff across more than 100 locations in the UK. Each week, the company runs 250 trains, covering a total of three million miles annually — the equivalent of circling the Earth’s equator 121 times.
Commercial Director Ed Wilson highlighted the company’s strategic vision:"We are essentially returning to our roots, reimagining Heavy Haul Rail as an entrepreneurial and growth-focused company. The difference is that we bring the benefit of over 25 years of operational experience and a strong record of customer service. Our services already cover three million miles a year, and we plan to expand further, offering the advantages of rail freight to new customers and markets. Recent milestones, such as running the UK’s first hydrogen train, demonstrate our commitment to innovation and integrated solutions for clients."
Heavy Haul Rail remains under its current shareholders, who also own rail freight businesses in Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Freightliner name and Intermodal Business have been acquired by global logistics leader CMA CGM.
With a sharper focus, increased agility, and dedication to sustainable growth, Heavy Haul Rail is poised to become a leading force in the UK’s high-capacity, low-carbon freight sector.
