Harlow Council has launched a new town-wide initiative focused on cleaning street signs and public fixtures, reinforcing its broader objective to rejuvenate local neighbourhoods.
The project will involve deep-cleaning road signs, bollards, roundabout indicators, traffic cones, and other pieces of street furniture—many of which haven't been properly maintained for decades.
While maintaining these items typically falls under the jurisdiction of Essex County Council, Harlow Council has chosen to take proactive steps. This effort aligns with its Building Harlow’s Future strategy, which includes a commitment to address maintenance issues that have long been overlooked. This cleaning programme is a direct example of that strategy in action.
The goal of the initiative is to eliminate dirt build-up, enhance the appearance of public infrastructure, and help restore a sense of pride in the community.
Work is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks, with teams systematically cleaning streets across all neighbourhoods. Residents are expected to notice significant visual improvements as the work progresses.
Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Member for Environment, commented:“Our mission to renew our neighbourhoods means taking action—even when responsibilities lie elsewhere—to bring pride back to our town. Neglected street signs and fixtures not only frustrate residents but also reflect poorly on our community. This project is about restoring that pride by refreshing every street corner and public fixture across Harlow.”
The cleaning programme is just one part of a broader range of initiatives being carried out by the council to improve public spaces, enhance safety, and make Harlow a more attractive place for both residents and visitors. Together with park upgrades and estate improvements, the effort signals a strong commitment to creating a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming environment throughout the town.
