Great Western Railway (GWR) has unveiled what it says is the UK rail sector’s first dedicated Security Operations Centre, marking a major step forward in the use of real-time surveillance and intelligence technology across the railway network.
Based at GWR’s headquarters in Swindon, the new facility has been designed to strengthen passenger and staff safety through continuous monitoring of CCTV systems and faster coordination of responses to security incidents.
24/7 monitoring hub
The centre operates around the clock and features a large-scale Barco video wall alongside eight live monitoring screens capable of displaying CCTV feeds, incident reports, operational data and mapping systems in real time.
GWR said the technology will allow security teams to respond more rapidly to incidents while improving coordination across the network.
The project received backing from both the Department for Transport and Network Rail.
Advanced analytics to identify security hotspots
Alongside live surveillance capabilities, the centre uses advanced analytical systems to help identify and monitor locations associated with anti-social behaviour, trespass and criminal activity.
The operator said this will support a more proactive approach to risk management by enabling staff to detect patterns and intervene before incidents escalate.
The facility will also work closely with British Transport Police (BTP) and regional police forces, providing video evidence and operational intelligence to assist investigations and improve case outcomes.
Official opening by British Transport Police
The Security Operations Centre was formally opened by BTP Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi, who said the investment demonstrated how technology and innovation can improve safety across the rail network.
She said the integration of surveillance and operational intelligence into a single control environment would strengthen BTP’s ability to tackle crime and support safer journeys for passengers and railway staff.
Wider operational role
In addition to CCTV monitoring, the centre will also function as a centralised hub for several operational and safety systems, including:
Station and car park alarm monitoring
Lone worker safety support
Multi-site incident coordination
GWR said the facility has future expansion potential, with plans being considered to incorporate contractor and volunteer management functions into the centre’s remit.
Benchmark for future rail security developments
GWR Business Assurance and Property Director Joe Graham described the opening of the facility as a significant milestone in the modernisation of rail security in the UK.
He said the centre establishes a new benchmark for future security developments across the railway industry while reinforcing the company’s commitment to protecting passengers and frontline staff.
According to Graham, the combination of advanced monitoring technology and real-time collaboration will help create a safer operating environment throughout the GWR network.
