Greater Manchester is set to take a major step toward an integrated public transport system, with rail services joining the Bee Network from December 2026.

Mayor Andy Burnham and transport leaders unveiled a new yellow promotional Bee Network train and outlined plans for station upgrades, contactless ticketing, and new services across the city-region.

The first two lines, connecting Manchester with Glossop and Stalybridge, will see 17 stations equipped with tap-and-go ticketing, making journeys across trains, trams, and buses easier. The rollout marks the start of a wider programme, with more lines expected to join in 2027 and 2028, and 96 stations fully integrated by 2030.

Passengers will benefit from simpler fares, real-time travel updates, and improved station facilities. Step-free access improvements are already underway at Bryn station in Wigan, with further upgrades planned at Hindley, Reddish North, and Swinton. Major stations including Piccadilly and Victoria will receive enhanced signage, customer information points, and coordinated connections with other transport modes.

The new system will also support Greater Manchester’s wider economic ambitions. Rail integration is expected to unlock opportunities for regeneration around Ashton and Stalybridge, create new jobs, and improve access to housing across the region.

Mayor Andy Burnham said:

“With one year to go until rail joins the Bee Network, we are on the cusp of delivering a fully integrated, world-class transport system. These changes will make everyday journeys easier and open up new opportunities for people across Greater Manchester.”

Transport Commissioner Vernon Everitt added that the scheme will boost economic growth, productivity, and access to jobs, while rail operators welcomed the collaboration as a step toward a reliable, inclusive, and customer-focused network.

By December 2026, passengers will also be able to use a new pre-paid, multi-modal ticket across buses, trams, and trains, with weekly fare caps automatically calculated. Longer-term plans include night-time airport services from May 2026 and full integration of eight rail lines by January 2028.

The Bee Network aims to deliver a greener, fairer, and better-connected transport system, building on the success of Greater Manchester’s bus franchising and paving the way for a fully joined-up public transport network outside London.
