Greater Anglia has introduced an upgraded version of its live rail network map designed to provide passengers with clearer real-time travel information, improved accessibility details, and better guidance during service disruption.

The redesigned digital map has been developed following a year-long consultation process involving customer and staff feedback, with the operator aiming to make journey planning simpler and more intuitive across its network.

According to Greater Anglia, the updated system gives passengers easier access to live train information, station facilities, interchange options, accessibility features, and alternative travel routes when disruption occurs.

The move reflects the growing importance rail operators are placing on real-time passenger information as the industry continues to focus on customer experience, digital services, and disruption management.

Among the improvements introduced are clearer interchange connections with other transport networks including the Elizabeth line and London Underground, enhanced geographic accuracy, simplified station naming, and more visible operator branding to help passengers identify available alternative routes more quickly.

The updated map also introduces improved accessibility features, allowing users to filter and display information such as step-free access when required.

Visual design changes include a simplified colour scheme, revised route graphics, and improved symbols for airports, coastal destinations, and stations with limited services.

Greater Anglia says the platform has also been optimised for mobile use through the company’s app, helping customers access live updates, tickets, and journey information more easily while travelling.

Kerry Rowley, Greater Anglia’s Senior Service Quality Customer Experience Manager, said customer feedback played a central role in reshaping the platform, particularly around the need for clearer information during periods of disruption.

The original version of the live map was introduced in 2023 as part of efforts to improve communication around delays, cancellations, and alternative journey options. The platform later received industry recognition, winning the Digital Technology Idea of the Year award at the Idea UK conference in 2024.

The latest update forms part of wider digital and operational changes taking place across the Anglia rail network as Greater Anglia, c2c, and Network Rail Anglia work more closely together under a unified leadership structure ahead of the planned transition toward Great British Railways.

The closer operational integration is intended to improve coordination between train operations, infrastructure management, and customer communication, particularly during disruption events where clear information and journey flexibility are increasingly important for passengers.

Across the wider rail industry, operators are investing heavily in digital customer information systems as passenger expectations around live updates, journey planning, and accessibility continue to evolve.

Real-time data platforms, mobile integration, and smarter disruption management tools are becoming increasingly important as rail operators attempt to improve customer confidence and operational resilience while managing complex and often heavily used transport networks.

Greater Anglia says the improved live map forms part of its ongoing effort to make rail travel easier to navigate and reduce uncertainty for passengers, particularly during periods of service disruption.
