Motorists are being encouraged to consider electric vehicles (EVs) for their next car, as the government launches a nationwide campaign highlighting the potential cost and environmental benefits.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has introduced ‘Get that Electric Feeling’, which will run across television, radio, digital platforms, social media, and physical locations such as petrol stations, shopping centres, motorway services, and roadside digital displays.

The campaign emphasizes savings of up to £3,750 on a new electric car through the government’s Electric Car Grant, along with annual reductions in fuel and maintenance costs of around £1,400.

With more than 87,000 public charging points already available nationwide—and plans to add another 100,000—the campaign aims to make switching to electric more convenient than ever. Government initiatives also include funding and updated planning rules to help drivers without off-street parking install home chargers, allowing charging costs as low as 2p per mile.

Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather said:

“Over 50,000 drivers have already made significant savings on new EVs and running costs. Our campaign shows millions of Brits how going electric can help their family budget while making travel easier and cleaner.”

The campaign draws on real-life testimonials from existing EV owners, showing how electric vehicles can fit into daily life, from local trips to longer journeys. Recent figures indicate that electric cars now make up one in four new vehicle sales in the UK, with over 50,000 drivers having already benefitted from the Electric Car Grant.

Ian Plummer, Chief Customer Officer, added:

“With almost two-thirds of car buyers now considering EVs, it’s important to reinforce the benefits to help turn interest into action. Nine in ten people who have switched say they won’t go back to petrol or diesel.”

Support has come from environmental and business groups alike. Dominic Phinn, Head of Transport at Climate Group, said:

“The UK is a global leader in clean road transport, but misconceptions are slowing adoption. This campaign is a welcome step towards promoting smarter, cheaper, and cleaner travel.”

Motability Operations also praised the initiative, highlighting accessibility benefits for disabled drivers. CEO Andrew Miller said:

“Through the Motability Scheme, thousands of disabled people are switching to EVs, gaining greater independence. Nearly 9 in 10 would choose an EV again, and this campaign brings that experience to life.”

The government hopes the campaign will boost consumer confidence, increase demand, and support the EV industry, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of the transition to electric transport.
