The complete shutdown of Gallows Corner for months is "essential" to avoid "more disruptive" closures, says Transport for London (TfL).

Gallows Corner roundabout and flyover is set to close completely for more than two months from today.

TfL has said that the closure is "essential" to allow for the renewal of the flyover - built only as a temporary structure in the 1970s.

The spokesperson said: "This complete renewal of the ageing Gallows Corner flyover is essential to ensuring the continued safety of the road network in Havering for the years to come.

"We’ve worked to minimise the impact of the work as much as possible and we're very sorry for any disruption to local residents and businesses.

"Road closures are unfortunately necessary for this vital work to take place and we're working hard to finish the complete renewal of the flyover by September."

Two businesses near Gallows Corner - Wax On car wash and Gallows Corner Motors - have been forced to shut completely for the duration of the works, according to the TfL website.

TfL has promised that all other local shops and businesses will be accessible during the closure.
