Drivers using the A417 Missing Link will soon start to experience tangible progress, with the very first section of new road set to open from 2 February.
After last year’s work, which included the installation of seven new structures and laying fresh tarmac, vehicles will begin using this new stretch ahead of the full closure of the existing A417 later in 2026.
The initial switch involves a short, single-lane section from the A46 towards the Air Balloon roundabout. Vehicles descending the hill on the A417 will be guided left towards the A46 junction and under the newly constructed bridge.
For traffic heading uphill towards the A46 Brockworth junction, drivers will navigate two narrow lanes marked by traffic management systems, allowing construction work to continue safely alongside. The road then returns to a standard incline as vehicles approach the Air Balloon roundabout.
The realignment also frees up space along the A417, enabling main construction works to progress safely over the coming weeks. Access to the A417 towards Cirencester, Leckhampton Hill, and the A436 remains open via the Air Balloon roundabout, including routes to Crickley Hill Country Park.
Celine Acard, Senior Project Manager for the A417 Missing Link, said:
“The progress made over the past year has been tremendous, and moving drivers onto the first section of new road, even a small one, is a significant milestone. This achievement reflects the commitment and teamwork of everyone involved in delivering this critical project.Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited for road users to see more of the new road, which will transform journeys, improve reliability, and provide long-term benefits for local communities, businesses, and visitors alike.”
