DRIVING FOR BETTER BUSINESS | EVOLVING NEEDS OF DRIVERS KEEPS WEBSITE BUSY

The Driving for Better Business website has become an increasingly busy marketplace for guidance and resources those who drive for work.

Changing legislation and a growing demand for health and well-being advice are driving visitors to the site.

With the explosion of vans on the UK’s roads – and the legal grey areas of vans vs cars vs HGVs – the Van Drivers’ Toolkit is a top resource, attracting up to 3000 visits a month and having been accessed more than 47,000 times since its launch late 2021.

Case studies and gap analysis are popular for driver and vehicle managers looking to set new standards of fleet safety and compliance.

Recent additions to the Driving for Better Business website include guidance on mental health, fatigue, driver medicals and general fitness to drive. New profiles of blue-chip companies looking to decarbonise their fleet, fire and rescue services managing sites following a crash, and courier companies delivering 12 million parcels a year – all help other organisations find examples of what can be done to reduce incidents and what business benefits can also be seen as a result.

Monthly podcasts cover subjects as diverse as spotting, tackling and preventing drug driving, transitioning to EVs and the true cost of vehicle downtime, plus a year-long programme profiling some of the leading women in fleet and transport management.

“The sector continues to change,” says Simon Turner, Campaigns Manager for Driving for Better Business. “The number of commercial vehicles, especially vans, on our roads has increased significantly over the last few years. The safety of those vehicles and the people driving them and the wellbeing of those drivers, is gaining ever more importance among employers who realise that good management of those who drive for work is critical, and that good safety management and efficient, high-performing companies go hand in hand. It’s important that we stay relevant in response to those changing challenges and increasing workloads.

“For those who manage occupational road risk, there’s a lot to keep up with, and it’s changing all the time. We’re here to share resources, provide support and encouragement and help find and fill in any gaps in current operations.”

The website is constantly being updated, and themes for interviews, articles and podcasts change each quarter, with fitness to drive the focus for Q1; compliance Q2; leadership and business benefits Q3; and safe vehicles for Q4.

Two years ago, organisations responsible for managing around 200,000 drivers were registered on the Driving for Better Business website and using the free tools and resources. Following the release of a range of new resources, such as the award-winning CALM Driver packs and Van Driver Toolkit, there are now thousands of businesses registered, collectively managing over 3.5 million drivers, of which the majority – 1.7 million – use vans; around 1.3 million use cars and nearly 600,000 use HGVs.

The Driving for Better Business Programme is free to access and supports those who manage drivers to reduce road risk in their organisation.
